Spellcrystal

Spellcrystal is a specially formulated vitreous substance used in a wide variety of magical devices. While some of its ingredients are fairly exotic and the exact composition of a particular type of spellcrystal is usually a closely guarded secret of the enchantery that uses it, it can still be produced in large quantities at a reasonable price.

Spellcrystal has two main advantages when used to make magical devices. One is that it binds magic very well, producing devices that are powerful and durable. The other is that it is transparent, and thus allows the enchanter to monitor the progress of an enchanment through the use of taggants.

Nearly all telekinetic devices use spellcrystal for their active components. In addition, the material has a number of particularly conspicuous uses:

Crystmail: a type of magic-resistant armor made of large numbers of crystalline scales layered over another material, such as cloth, leather, silk, or chitin.

Orbs: Many magical devices, such as imagers, scrying orbs, and palaphones, have crystal balls as their active components. These balls are made of spellcrystal. The "brains" of a golem also consist of a crystal ball, and represent its most vulnerable point.

Glinten, suncrystals and force crystals are also based on materials loosely related to spellcrystal.
