The Locus

The Locus of Connected Worlds is a collection of over a thousand habitable worlds, located in an alternate universe where magic is commonplace, linked by teleport gates.

In genre terms, the Locus is a fantasy setting with extensive space opera and some steampunk influences, as well as a more modern feel than most fantasy settings. In the spectrum of "high fantasy" to "low fantasy" it is off the spectrum on the high fantasy end; most magic is mass-produced, so it is difficult to go anywhere without encountering multiple magic items. Since many of these magic items emulate technology, this is something I like to call a "quasimodern fantasy."

As a genre blender, it is characterized by seamless integration of source genres; rather than simply incorporating elements from multiple genres into a single setting (i.e. magic in a science fiction universe, robots in a fantasy world), it instead combines multiple genres into each element (i.e. crossbows that shoot energy rays, sail-powered hovercraft, etc.).

More detail on the philosophy behind this setting can be found in the page for the Quasimodern Fantasy Project.
