Common items
This is a short list of magic items that are likely to be encountered in everyday life.
Light sources: there are no less than five different types of magical lighting in the Locus. The main ones are:
-
Arc lanterns: devices that summon electricity from the ionosphere to create a spark, which then gives off light.
-
Glow bulbs: these are bioluminescent plant appendages that convert sugary sap into light.
-
Illusion lanterns: these are not actually light sources at all, but cause people to hallucinate what is actually there.
-
Magma lanterns: these summon magma, which then gives off light and heat.
-
Suncrystals: the proverbial solar-powered flashlight, these store light by day and release it by night.
Utility items: these are some of the smaller items that are likely to be found around the house.
-
Jars of preservation: these store food by turning it to stone. They play a similar role to a refrigerator, but do not require any energy to operate.
-
Bar of cleaning: a small block of material (such as ivory) that is enchanted to create a magical aura with surfactant effects. It works similarly to soap, but is an infinitely reusable magic item rather than a consumable substance.
-
Magma hearth: a modified magma lantern, usually surrounded by lava rocks to absorb radiant heat and transfer it to rising air. These are used both as cooking stoves and as building heat sources.
-
Bronze icicle: a device for generating cold, these are used for air conditioning in hot climates.
-
Teleport faucet: similar to a normal faucet, except that there is no link between the faucet and the place where water emerges. Instead, turning the knob causes water to materialize out of thin air. This is actually accomplished by televation, which is generally considered more reliable than mundane plumbing because teleport gates do not leak.
-
Rain closet: a larger version of the teleport faucet with multiple summoning points. It is used as a shower.
-
Palaphone: a portable communication device, similar to a cell phone.
Commercial items: these are items more likely to be found in the marketplace than around the house.
-
Glinten: a magical substance that transmutes base metals into gold, used for large denominations of currency.
-
Mindscript: telepathic writing that can be read by anyone, regardless of literacy or native tongue. It is commonly used for signs, as it eliminates the need to translate the same message into multiple languages.
