Force shield

Force shields are small, powerful force bubbles used as armor to deflect incoming weapon or projectile attacks. Unlike most settings, a force shield in the Locus is literally a shield: it is carried in the hand or strapped to one arm, and protects an area around the force shield generator. They can also be used as body armor; when used in that capacity, they are known as force rondels. They also form the hilt guards on many swords.

The main advantage of force shields is their light weight. This makes them especially popular among wingknights. They are also effective at stopping a wide variety of magical weapons by preventing contact between the weapon and its target. This negates the advantages of melting blades, electrified weapons, vampiric weapons, and many others.

The main drawback of force shields is that they are only effective if there is something on which to exert a force. This makes them completely ineffective against energy attacks, such as negate magic, such as dispelling maces and dispelling arrows. Because of these drawbacks, it is common to see force bubbles used in more indirect ways, such as in field stabilized earthworks.
